Chapter 4 - Anti-Democratic Ideologies

Trump / Bannon "Tear It All Down"

Bannon was not merely a student or passive observer of this prophecy; he wanted to be an agent of it, and an architect of the era that came next. So when he watched Trump glide down a golden escalator to announce his campaign for president, in 2015, his first thought was, “That’s Hitler!” By that he meant someone who intuitively understood the aesthetics of power, as in Nazi propaganda films. He saw in Trump someone who could viscerally connect with the general angst that Bannon was roiling and make himself a vessel for Americans’ grievances and desires.

A growing movement led by right-wing politicians is increasingly challenging the separation of church and state. On the ballot this November are several high-profile Republican candidates who are embracing Christian nationalist ideals.

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO): "The church is supposed to direct the government. The government is not supposed to direct the church."  Kari Lake (R), Arizona Gubernatorial Candidate: You can call us extremists. You can call us domestic terrorists. You know who else was called a lot of names his whole life? Jesus.

Many dismiss the historic American principle of the separation of church and state. They say they do not advocate a theocracy, but argue for a foundational role for their faith in government. Their rise coincides with significant backing among like-minded grass-roots supporters, especially as some voters and politicians blend their Christian faith with election fraud conspiracy theories, QAnon ideology, gun rights and lingering anger over Covid-related restrictions. Their presence reveals a fringe pushing into the mainstream.Declaring the United States a Christian nation and ending federal enforcement of the separation of church and state are minority views among American adults, according to the Pew Research Center.

“Christian nationalist” once summoned images of fiery extremists — stark racists concerned with keeping immigrants out of the United States, or politicians who argued that the Ten Commandments ought to coexist in law with the Constitution. Then came Jan. 6, and suddenly the term became a culture-war acid test: One member of Congress began selling “Proud Christian Nationalist” T-shirts, while First Baptist Dallas pastor Robert Jeffress said that if opposing abortion, transgender rights and illegal immigration made him a Christian nationalist, “count me in.”

For three days this week, the Rev. Jennifer Butler has toured Wisconsin, warning against the resurgence of white Christian nationalism in politics and religion alike.

White Christian nationalism is as old as the nation, says Butler. “It’s a deliberate attempt to conflate religious identity with ethnic and national identity,” she says, “to say that America is a nation that was founded by and for white Christians, and primarily for men to be in charge.”

It has resurfaced throughout U.S. history. It was emboldened by the presidency of Donald Trump, and it was embedded in the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol insurrection that sought to prevent the peaceful transfer of power once Trump lost his reelection bid in 2020.
